Become a Merchandise Displayer

Future Classic Masquerade Ball 046.jpg
Creative Commons License photo credit: Sean Future

Merchandise displayers are responsible for planning and arranging merchandise in windows, showcases, and/or on the sales floor of retail stores in a way that will best attract the attention of customers. Depending on the store, the merchandise can consist of clothes, accessories, furniture, hardware, or other items. Merchandise displayers take advantage of color, lighting, and space to optimize the appeal of their displays.

In small stores, a displayer may work alone, designing the store's overall layout and deciding how the store's merchandise should be presented. In larger stores, several displayers may work together, sometimes under the supervision of a display director. For large store chains, displayers may work in corporate headquarters, collaborating with corporate marketers to develop display designs for the entire chain. Merchandise displayers generally have a stable 40-hour work week, although they can expect evening, weekend, and/or overtime work for special sales or holiday seasons.

Education, Certification, Licensing

Although merchandise displayers are not required to have an advanced education beyond high school, a degree or certificate in visual merchandising, graphic design, fashion design, interior design, or fine arts will help greatly in this competitive field. Those possessing a bachelor's degree will have the best chance of not only finding work but also of advancing up the career ladder, possibly to corporate design departments.

Fashion Comes Home to the White House - Creating Your Own Fashion Legacy

There is an enormous buzz around our nation, and even perhaps around the world, about what Michelle Obama will wear to the inauguration today. It's an amazing piece of a historic event - the role that FASHION will play - and rightfully so. The endless newsreels playing for the last few weeks have been looking back at past first ladies and the styles and colors of their inaugural ensembles. And, of course, in this case, there are two little girls to "ooh and ahh" over as well. What a day to be a dress maker!

By now, if you were up early, you saw Michelle Obama leave her (very) temporary residence in a golden yellow brocade dress with a matching long jacket and long silk scarf - smiling and waving to news crews as she entered St. John's Church in Washington DC with her husband - the 44th president of our country. It felt like every news channel you turned to did a critique of her outfit - how it seemed to match the color of the church - that it was a "happy" color and embraced Mrs. Obama's joie de vivre when it comes to fashion.

You might have seen them while watching TV shows such as Extreme Makeover, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, or What Not to Wear. Or you might have heard that Martha Stewart needed them to give her advice on how to look sympathetic to a jury.

We're talking about Image Consultants, and they have one of the hottest new businesses today.

Also known by such titles as wardrobe consultant, fashion stylist, or makeover consultant, image consultants are paid to show people how to create a fabulous impression. They might recommend wearing different colors or new styles, go through closets to toss out clothing that isn't working, shop for a new wardrobe, and put together incredible outfits. They might advise a change of hairstyle, makeup, or grooming.

However, image is more than physical appearance. In addition to how someone looks, we also form impressions based on how someone talks and behaves.

It is very important for any designer product to intrigue customers. It should fulfill fantasies and not just a basic need. Today, consumers are more interested in projecting a particular image that will make them feel young and sophisticated - and this is what the fashion marketers take advantage of. Fashion marketers create a fantasy for selling those products to customers, through visual marketing campaigns, savvy advertising ideas or just by picking clothing from the designers, which they feel will be very popular among customers.

Another major responsibility of fashion marketers and merchandisers is to move trendy clothing into stores when those items are in fashion. Not performing this task can result in a loss for the designer. A good fashion marketer and merchandiser can also create trends by promoting a certain look when the time is right. To do this, they need to have a proper understanding of the social trends and psychology of the consumers.

f you've ever thought about modeling but were unsure if you could meet the physical requirements, you have come to the right place. The following will give you all the basics if it's a good idea for you to proceed.

1) Nice complexion. A zit here or there generally will not count you out. However, if you have "problem skin" it will take a lot of time and money to "photoshop" it out thereby costing too much money. Most clients will not want to pay for this - or you.

2) A well toned body. Obviously, bulges of fat anywhere on your body will not work. Even a slim body can have flabby areas if the person is not working out.

3) Well proportioned body. Hopefully this does not need too much more explanation. Generally runway and editorial models are on the thinner side, while promotional models are more full figured and voluptuous. Figure out who you are before you apply to the agencies.

10 Easy Tips for the New Model

Marchesa's Moment.jpg
Creative Commons License photo credit: Tammy Manet

So you want to be a model. The first thing you need to do is think about what your ultimate goal is, and then, find the steps to getting there. Do you want to be a fashion model signed with a top international agency? Do you want to be a catalog model? A model for men's magazines?

There are a lot of different types of modeling, and it's important to know what you want from the modeling industry. It's also important to be open-minded to trying different styles of modeling, that will expand your portfolio and broaden your diversity.

If your new to modeling, this article will be very helpful to your future career as a model.

Tip number one: You do not have to pay a photographer. Contrary to what you might hear, this tip is 100% true. You do not ever have to pay money to be a model. You do not have to pay an "agency" to be featured on their directory. You never have to pay a model/photographer networking website to have "access" to their castings. You should never have to go to a "modeling school" to learn how to model. You can do it all on your own.

What is your alternative option to paying a photographer?

Tip number two: TFP/TFCD. Is. Your. Best. Friend. (When your starting off, of course.) TFP/TFCD stands for Time for Print and Time for Compact Disc. TFCD is more commonly used, because most photographers use digital equipment and sometimes do not have access to high-quality printing equipment. In translation, TFCD is basically a trade. The photographer puts in their time, the model puts in their time, and as a result, they come away with a compact disc of pictures for their portfolio.

But where do you find photographers willing to shoot TFCD?

Tip number three: Networking websites. There are many networking websites on the internet for models, photographers, make-up artists, wardrobe and hair stylists. My first choice in networking websites, which I have had great success meeting with many different photographers in my area, is ModelMayhem.com (http://www.modelmayhem.com) I highly recommend creating a profile page on this website if you are serious about becoming a model. You can find photographers in your area, browse castings, events, and participate in its' infamous forum. You can receive advice, offer advice, have your pictures critiqued, and build your network by making "friends." It is easy to navigate and offers 20 photo slots and you never will have to pay a single penny. (Other examples of model/photographer networking websites are: www.onemodelplace.com, www.musecube.com, www.models.com, www.modellaunch.com) Networking websites are great for getting exposure to the modeling industry and finding TFCD, as well as paid work.

But what are some other ways to find exposure and paid opportunities?

It is an exciting industry that attracts many brilliant, ambitious, creative, talented, committed and hard working people. Success in the fashion industry calls for an ultimate passion and enthusiasm to achieve set targets. The desires to create, see, explore and appreciate beauty must be inherent. It's a creative field and one needs to possess as well as acquire certain skills that are indispensable, such as thinking creatively beyond the obvious and the ability to carve a niche in almost all the possible projects by making it different yet stunning than the previous one.

Careers in the fashion industry revolve around beauty. In order to be successful in this field you should have the unquenchable thirst for beauty in its all-relevant forms. Changing fashion statements determine the change in the trend of clothing, ornamenting and above all, adopting new ways of carrying oneself.

It is the style that brings elegance with a difference in different designs. Style is an individual aspect. No two people can have exactly the same style statement because every person has a unique style of their own. Therefore, the concepts related to fashion are also different. Some people feel that fashion is the passion of the slaves and that is why they try to dress and carry themselves in a manner similar to that of models walking on the ramp. This thought is challenged by a different thought – those who go against the fashion trends are themselves the slaves of the fashion.

No matter what different concepts abound, fashion is a career industry that is never going to fade. There are immense opportunities in this field, as you can opt for any of the following job prospects pertaining to your areas of interest: modeling, catwalk choreography, fashion photography, designing, merchandising, make- up artists, hair styling, and accessory designing.

Modeling: Modeling is a promising career that requires having a certain confidence and a pleasing appearance that needs to confirm to the basic standards of fashion designers. One needs to have an inclination towards glitz and glamour, as it is part and parcel of this industry.

Catwalk Choreography: Catwalk Choreography aims at training models to present their attire in an appealing and professional way. Designers hire talented choreographers because they know that every movement with the background music counts on the ramp. It can make or break an entire fashion show.

Fashion Photography: Fashion Photography is a very demanding career that requires the utmost dedication, sincerity, sensitivity and at the same time objectivity towards the subjects. It is the job of the fashion photographer to present clear expression to almost all the possible facets of style such as fabric, design, designer, model and the like.

Fashion Designing: Fashion designing is one of the most promising careers in fashion industry. It needs to have the ability to think, comprehend and implement the latest and original ideas in order to be successful in this field. Designers can specialize in apparel, textile, accessory designer and many more.

Fashion Coordinator: A fashion coordinator is responsible for coordinating fabrics and trimmings, quality and design. He/she needs to keep a constant track of production schedules and needs to be aware of the status of buyers' orders.

No matter what your goals or specialties are, expect to work hard every day with a fashion internship. The internship can be a solid step on the road towards making connections and working in the industry, and students often find themselves proving their mettle through long nights and thankless tasks. One might compare a fashion internship to a medical student's year in residency.

• Stay organized: Most internships require a certain application date and paperwork including transcripts and proof of enrollment. Stay on top of these details and you should be less likely to miss a deadline.

Creative Commons License photo credit: photomequickbooth

Want to lose weight and be healthy too? Weight loss without watching what you eat will not only set up a never-ending yo-yo dieting spiral, it can also trigger health problems. Here are seven new nutrition and weight-loss tips to help you drop pounds in a healthy way.

1. Start each meal by eating veggies. Veggies are loaded with vitamins and minerals as well as with fiber, so you will feel full quicker. If you start each meal with proper nutrition, weight loss will quickly follow.

2. Put away the salt shaker. A new study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control says that two out of every three Americans need to reduce their salt intake to no more than 1,500 mg per day to avoid problems such as high blood pressure. Get Your Tax Dollars Back With Debt Relief Grants

There are millions of American citizens today who are in need of immediate debt relief, yet very few are applying for government funded debt grants. It is a reasonable assumption that this is purely due to their complete unfamiliarity with the United States government grant programs. Some are not even aware of the mere existence of this abundant source of financial aid, and as a result, millions of dollars in free government money remains unclaimed each year by the taxpaying citizens who are not only eligible to receive the funding, but have actually provided it as well.

We are all well aware of the fact that for every single dollar that you earn or spend, you will be required to contribute a fraction of that money to the government in taxes. What is little known by the common American taxpayer, is that a fraction of each of those tax dollars that you are contributing, is directly deposited into a government grant fund that distributes free grants and financial aid to all qualified applicants. You very well may be entitled to an undetermined amount of free government money in debt relief grants if you qualify, which thousands do.

It is the sexiness and sultriness that a model is able to exude on top of that perfectly sculpted body that is the answer to an aspiring model's bid on how to become a Victoria Secret model. Becoming a Victoria Secret model is one of the most competitive conquests in the modeling world. Needless to say, anyone who is aspiring to be one should be prepared to take the physical scrutiny and the rejection that could come from auditioning to grace the pages of the lingerie company's catalog or to walk the length of its next season's launch runway.

There are currently two top modeling agencies handling the booking of models for Victoria Secret. These are the prestigious Ford Modeling Agency and the Elite Modeling Agency. Those who want to know how to become a Victoria Secret model have to peruse the web pages of these modeling agencies for the latest requirements. It would be a good idea to register in several modeling websites and upload your photographs as an online modeling portfolio. Most modeling agencies prefer natural snapshots to professional photographs as these show them a better picture of the raw material they could be working on. An aspiring Victoria Secret model can also register in the websites of the Elite and the Ford Modeling Agencies and upload their photographs. They would also be required to enter some personal information as well as their physical measurements and vital statistics. As in any website where users undertake a registration process, it is important to note the provisions in the "Terms of Use Agreement" section. These two model ling agencies announce open calls for aspiring Victoria Secret models from time to time. It is during these open calls when aspiring models are asked to come in for a look-see and an interview. During these calls, prospective models will be measured as well. Those who are shorter than 5'8" in height should not even aspire to be a Victoria Secret model as this is the minimum height requirement. The perfect vital statistics of 34-24-34 is also a must for any Victoria Secret model.

Even if you follow all these steps on how to become a Victoria Secret model, there is no guarantee that you will be taken in as soon as you walk into the offices of the two modeling agencies handling the lingerie company's model bookings. Most of the existing Victoria Secret models have already had their rounds of the runway and the fashion industry. But, yes, if you do have all of the qualities of being a Victoria Secret model, do go out and try your luck. Start building your modeling career outside of Victoria Secret while you are waiting for that final call. Make sure you do not lose sight of what your ultimate goal is. Who knows, you just might be the next new face of sexiness and sultriness to walk the Victoria Secret runway.
